Duolingo for English and Irish

Activity

Duolingo for English and Irish

What to do with this activity?

If your child needs help with reading, writing or talking in English or Irish, or if they particularly enjoy learning online, try Duolingo.

Duolingo is a free educational website or app (application) that offers learning courses in 23 different languages. We think that you could use Duolingo to boost your child's confidence in English and Irish as school subjects in the Irish Primary School Curriculum.

If there are two languages spoken in your home, your child might enjoy using Duolingo to get practice in expressing themselves in English. Duolingo is great for learning Irish too. Each lesson lets you hear how words are pronounced and gives you short exercises. Even if your child is confident with English and Irish as school subjects, they might enjoy Duolingo as an interactive learning website.

Duolingo asks you to register, but it's 100% free, with no adverts! As a learner, your child can set their own goals, decide how often they want their lessons to be and for how long. Help your child to register and see if it suits them. Don't forget to supervise any internet activity to keep your child safe.

  • Why am I doing this?

Children gain confidence in speaking through demonstrating their knowledge to others. Chatting and listening to your child will help build their communication skills. Talking about words and their meaning in everyday life will also help build your child’s vocabulary – and your own!

  • How can I do more?

Funny stories are interesting and a good excuse to get your child talking. At mealtimes, each family member could tell something interesting or something funny that happened during the day. Watching TV together can also provide a good opportunity for chat and to discuss what you are watching. Check if your child understands different things they hear and encourage your child to teach you new words and things they have learnt.
